Jep jep ja taas blogin pariin. Ensimmäinen osa Lontoon vierailijoita on nyt turvallisesti palannut Suomen maan kamaralle ja seuraava joukko saapuu huomenna. Olemme aviomies-raukan kanssa siivonneet kotia kuin pienet myyrät koska huomisesta alkaen se toimii myös majatalona Lontoon kävijöille. Noh, ehdimme me viime viikolla hiukan rentoutumaankin, kävimme katsomassa Ross Noble stand up-koomikon keikan West Endin Apollossa. Ironista kyllä, shown nimi oli "things" vaikka Noble itse ei tällä hetkellä omista kovin paljoa juttuja. Hänen koko omaisuutensa tuhoutui Australian taannoisissa metsäpaloissa ja ihme kyllä Noble sai tästäkin tragediasta muutaman vitsin väännettyä. Lisäksi opimme että Noblella on tätä nykyä pieni tyttövauva, ja että vauva muistuttaa Noblen mielestä pikkiriikkistä merirosvoa valkoisessa hihattomassa paidassaan ja pienine muskelisine käsivarsineen.

Show oli pääasiassa todella hauska, mutta olimme silti hiukan pettyneitä. Tämä oli jo toinen kerta kun menimme katsomaan kyseistä koomikkoa (ja samaa showta) ja jotenkin olin aina ajatellut että Ross Noble improvisoi kaiken tilanteen mukaan. No se ei pidä paikkaansa. Kyllä suuri osa showsta oli uutta improvisointia, mutta kaikki päävitsit olivat samoja. Ehkä odotukset olivat liian korkealla, ehkä jännitimme mitä muut showsta ajattelevat tai ehkä Noble ei ollut parhaassa vireessään, mutta täydellinen keikka ei ollut. Ensimmäinen vierailu tämän kiertueen keikalla sen sijaan hipoi täydellisyyttä. Toivonko siis etten olisi mennyt katsomaan keikkaa toista kertaa? En. Aionko seuraavalla kiertueella mennä katsomaan Noblea? Varmasti. Sillä toki tällä toisella kerrallakin sai hetkittäin nauraa katsomossa vedet silmissä.

translation: Back to the blog. First part of London visitors have happily returned to the Finnish soil and the next lot is due to arrive tomorrow. We have been cleaning the house like little voles because starting from tomorrow our house will also be an inn for the London visitors. Well, we had some time to relax last week too, we went to see the stand up comedian Ross Noble in West End's Apollo. Ironic as it is, the show was called "things" althoug Noble himself doesn't own too many things at the moment. All of his earthly possessions were destroyed in Australia's recent bush fires and amazinly Noble was able to crack a few jokes about that too. We also learned that Noble has a little babygirl now, and that the baby reminds him of a teeny pirate in her white sleeveless top and with her little muscular arms.

On the whole the show was very funny, however we were a bit disappointed. This was a second time we went to see Noble (and the same show) and I had somehow always thought Noble improvises everything on stage. Well, that's not the case. Many parts of the show were improvisation, but most of the main jokes were the same. Maybe our expectations were too high, maybe we were worried what others might think of the show or maybe Noble didn't have his best night, but the gig wasn't perfect. On the other hand first visit to this tour's gig was pretty close to perfection. So do I wish I wouldn't have seen the show second time? No. Am I going to see a gig on his next tour? Certainly. Because after all, at times I did laugh with tears in my eyes even on this second gig.

Lisää Lontoon parhaita juttuja.

1. Arkkitehtuuri. Tai pitäisikö sanoa historialliset talot. Moderni arkkitehtuuri Lontoossa ei mielestäni ole kovin kummosta. Ylipäätään Lontoo on tosi sekalainen, rakennettu hienojen talojen lähelle council-slummeja ja taas hienoja taloja. Mutta mutta. Silloin kun talot ovat hienoja, ne ovat TOSI HIENOJA. Nuo ihanat valkotaloiset victorianiset kadut, joissa on erkkereitä, vanhan ajan rautaaitaa, korkeat huoneet ja koristetta julkisivussa ja huoneistoissa. Kipsikuviot katossa, en tiedä mitä ne ovat suomeksi mutta englanniksi "cornicing" ja "ceiling rose", ovat aivan järkyttävän upeita. Onhan näitä tietty muidenkin maiden vanhoissa taloissa, mutta silti, pisteet Lontoolle. Vain rakas Pariisi on ihanampi kuin Lontoon kauniit kadut.

2. Zara Home. Tämä on mielettömän ihana sisustuskauppa. Niin raikasta ja romattista, kuitenkin tyylikästä. Eikä laadussakaan ole mitään vikaa. Zara home -kaupassa ei ole montaa juttua joista en tykkäisi. Mutta tuskin tämä on mikään ihme, onhan Zara vaateliikekin menestys. Ehkä Zarasta pitäisi kehua Espanjaa eikä Lontoota, mutta nyt kehun Lontoon liikettä, koska se on tullut tutuimmaksi. Regents Streetille siis.

3. Leong's Legend. Tämä ruokapaikka on tullut tosi tutuksi viimeaikoina. Juuri kun kaikki luulivat tuntevansa China Townin ja sen ravintolat, on Leongs Legend avartanut käsitystä aasialaisesta ruoasta. Kuuleman mukaan kokki on ollut Taiwanissa michelin tasoisessa ravintolassa ja nyt Lontoon Leong's Legendissä. Ruoka on todella hyvää ja ennen kokematonta, paikka viihtyisä ja sijainti keskeinen. Ja hintataso on varsin huokea. Toinen erittäin hyvä ruokapaikka China Townissa on japanilainen Misato. Mutta sitä varten pitää varautua jonottamaan (kuten joskus Leong's Legendiinkin).

1. Architecture. Or should I say historical buildings. Modern architecture in London isn't very special in my opinion. On the whole London is very mixed, there are beautiful streets, council slums and then more beautiful houses. But but. When the houses are beautiful they are STUNNING. Those streets of fabulous white victorian houses, with bay windows, historical iron fences, high ceilings and decorations on the exterior and in the interior. And the cornicings and ceiling roses are magnificent. These might well excist in old buildings abroad too, but still, points to London. Only my beloved Paris is prettier than the gorgeous streets of London.

2. Zara home. This is a fantastic shop. The furnishings they have are so fresh and romantic, yet so stylish. And the quality isn't bad either. There's not many things I wouldn't like in Zara Home. But that's hardly a surprise, Zara clothing chain has been a great success too. Maybe I should congratulate Spain for bringing us Zara, not London, but I'll rave about the London store now. It is that shop I know best. So Regent Street it is.

3. Leong's Legend. We've learnt to know this restaurant very well recently. Just when everyone thought they knew China Town already, Leong's Legend has widened the horizon of Asian food. I've heard the chef used be the chef of a michelin star restaurant in Taiwan before and now he's here. The food is really good and original, the restaurant is cosy and the location is very central. And the prices, they're very affordable. Other great eatery in China Town is Japanese Misato. But one has to queue for that (as sometimes for Leong's Legend too).

Koska Lontooseen on nyt lähiaikoina tulossa ystäviä ja sukulaisia joukoittain, on kaupunki ollut pinnalla ajatuksissa. Itse tulee aina helposti käytyä samoissa paikoissa; samat kaupat, samat ruokapaikat, samat bussit. Joka tapauksessa tietyt asiat ovat erottuneet Lontoossa edukseen ja tässä pieni katsaus kaupungin suosikkijuttuihin.

1. Candy cakes. Nämä leivonnaiset ovat vaan niin ihanan näköisiä. Varmasti melkoisen epäterveellisiä ja koostuvat lähinnä rasvasta ja sokerista, mutta jos leivonnaisia katsoo ihan vaan visuaalisesta näkökulmasta, ne ovat upeita. Eivätkä ne hassummalta kai maistukaan. Kuulema julkimot Madonnasta Nelson Mandelaan tarjoavat näitä kakkuja kutsuillaan. Kyllä kelpaa..

2. Holland Park. Lontoon varmasti romanttisin ja salaperäisin puisto. Ei ehkä niin mittava kuin monet muut Lontoon puistot mutta sitäkin sympaattisempi. Ja asuuhan puistossa ihana riikinkukko.

3. Portobello Road. Notting Hillin markkinakatu tuskin sen koommin esittelyjä kaipaa. Hyvä paikka ihan vaan ihmisten bongailuun ja lorvailuun. Kojuissa antiikkia ja pientä rihkamaa, myös tuoreita kasviksia ja ihania kukkia. Meininki on mukavan boheemi ja rento.

translation: Because loads of friends and family will be visiting London soon, the town has been on my mind quite a lot lately. I normally just visit the same places over and over again; same shops, same restaurants, same buses. However, some things certainly stand out in London and here's a brief review of the best bits in London.

1. Candy cakes. These cakes just look so lovely. I'm sure they are pretty bad for you and consist mostly of sugar and fat, but if you think of them purely from a visual aspect, they are great. And they don't taste too bad either. I've heard celebrities from Madonna to Nelson Mandela have these cakes served in their parties. Well, if it's good enough for Maddy..

2. Holland Park. Certainly London's most romantic and mysterious park. Maybe not as vast as some other parks in London, but that makes it all the nicer. And a fabulous peacock lives there too.

3. Portobello Road. The market street in Notting Hill probably doesn't need much of an introduction. It's a great place just for observing people and loitering around. On the stalls there's some antik and some junk, also fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers. The atmosphere is bohemian and relaxed.

Paisley Day

Blogin kirjoittaminen on kummasti harventunut ensimmäiseltä viikolta, harmi. Siihen on kaksi syytä, toinen että olen ollut/olen kipeä ja joudun ramppaamaan lääkärissä ja toinen että minulle ei ole tapahtunut juurikaan mitään vähään aikaan (johtuen osittain varmaan siitä että olen ollut kipeä). No mutta.

Liitteenä on kuvia siitä paisley mekosta jonka ostin Zarasta joitain viikkoja sitten. Mekko on musta aivan mahtava, ehkä jopa vähän liian tyttömäinen, mutta ite tykkään. Lauantaina tehtiin pikavisiitti Lontooseen, löysin Tk Maxista sellaisen täydellisen tunikatyyppisen valkoisen paidan, mutta se on nyt jossain paikallisen rautatieyhtiön omistuksessa. Jäi nimittäin junaan. Oho. Toivottavasti sen saa pian takaisin. Mitäs täs muuta.. Ai niin, mulla on nykyisin agentti! Jee!


translation: Posts on this blog have become less frequent since the first week, that's a pity. There's two reasons for it, one is that I've been/am poorly and have to run back and forth to the surgery and other is that nothing has happened to me for a while (partly because I haven't been well). Oh well.

Here's some photos of the paisley dress I bought from Zara a few weeks ago. I think the dress is great, maybe even too girly, but I love it. On Saturday we visited London briefly, I found a perfect tunic type white blouse, but it's now possession of the local railway company. It was left on the train. Oops. Hopefully I'll get it back soon. What else.. I have an agent now! Yippee!

King of Cool

Koska viimekirjoituksessa hehkutin tyylien kuningatarta, tasa-arvon nimiin hehkutan tässä tekstissä nyt puolestani tyylien kuningasta - Noel Fieldingiä. Noel on tuttu the Mighty Boosh tv-sarjasta joka on aivan älyttömän hauska ja KREISI ohjelma, virallisesti luokiteltu "suurrealistiseksi sitcomiksi". Sarjassa Noel näyttelee Vince Noiria jonka elämä pyörii asusteiden ja hiustyylien ympärillä ja joka aina selviytyy ongelmasta kuin ongelmasta jonkun aurinkorasvan tai hiussuoristimen avulla pelastaen kaverinsakin. En tiedä onko sarjaa esitetty muissa maissa, mutta jos on niin kannattaa tsekata. Meidän täytyi tietenkin hommata kolme tuotantokautta dvd:illä, sen verran moneksi katselukerraksi niistä irtoaa nauruja.

Muut keskeiset hahmot Mighty Booshissa ovat Julian Barrattin esittämä "the man the maveric" Howard Moon, Noelin veljen Michael Fieldingin esittämä shamaani Naboo ja gorilla Bollo. Noel Fieldingin tyyli näyttäisi olevan siviilissäkin jokseenkin roolihahmonsa kaltainen. Värejä, paljetteja, (toivottavasti teko-) turkista, pillifarkkuja, rokkistara meininkiä ja hallittuja ylilyöntejä. Ja hiuksissa omien sanojensa mukaan "a basic back-comb structure, slightly root-boosted framing a cheeky fringe".


translation: Because I already raved about the queen of styles, in the name of equality I'll rave about the king of styles this time - Noel Fielding. Noel is famous from the tv series Mighty Boosh, which is unbelievably funny and GRAZY program, officcially classified as "surreal sitcom". In the series Noel plays Vince Noir who's life is all about accessories and hairstyles and who always solves problems with some suncream or hairstraightener saving not only himself but his friends too. I'm not too sure if the series is being broadcasted in other countries but if it is, it's worth checking out. We even had to get all three seasons on dvd, so much laughter we can get out of the program.

Other central characters in Mighty Boosh are "the man the maveric" Howard Moon played by Julian Barratt, shaman Naboo played by Michael Fielding (Noel Fielding's brother) and gorilla Bollo. Noel Fielding's personal style would seem to be pretty similar to that of his character. Lots of colours, sequins, (hopefully fake-) fur, skinny jeans, rock star -habitus and controlled exaggeration. And the hair is, in his own words "a basic back-comb structure, slightly root-boosted framing a cheeky fringe".

Queen of Cool

Englannissa on taas alkanut X Factor kausi. X Factor on saman tyyppinen ohjelma kuin Idols Suomessa. Aikaisempina tuotantokausina ohjelman jälkeen nähtävää Xtra Factor ohjelmaa juonsi cooleuden kuningatar Fearne Cotton. Ei enää. Minne Fearne on kadonnut? Ainakin Fearne on yhä kuultavissa radiossa. Hän on toteuttanut jokaisen juontajan unelman ja saanut oman shown BBC Radio 1:ssä joka arkiaamu 10-12.45. Eräiden tietolähteiden mukaan Fearne on päättänyt jättää Xtra Factorin pois työlistaltaan keskittyäkseen uraan Usa:ssa. Ja ensi viikolla alkaa Tv:ssä uusi dokumenttisarja "Fearne and.." jossa Fearne tarkkailee julkimoiden elämää Paris Hiltonista Peaches Geldofiin. Hmm.

Joka tapauksessa, Fearnella on loistava tyyli. Silloin tällöin asut menevät överiksi, mutta 99% ajasta toimivat mielestäni loistavasti. Onnistuvat olemaan tyttömäisiä mutta särmikkäitä. Pisteet Fearnelle.


translation: X Factor season has started in the Uk again. X Factor is pretty much the same as Idols in Finland. In previous seasons Fearne cotton, queen of cool, used to present the companion show Xtra Factor. Not any more. Where has Fearne disappeared? At least Fearne can be still listened on radio. She has fulfilled every presenters dream and landed a show on BBC Radio 1 mon-fri 10-12.45. According to some sources Fearne has decided to skip Xtra Factor to concentrate on her career in the Us. And next weed a new Tv series "Fearne and.." will start where Fearne will observe the life of celebrities from Paris Hilton to Peaches Geldof. Hmm.

Anyhow, Fearne has a great style. Every now and then the outfits are a bit too much, but 99% of the time they work brilliantly. They manage to be girly with an edge. Points to Fearne.

Primary colours and hoovers

Kävimme viime viikolla Tate modernissa. Häpeäkseni joudun tunnustamaan, että visiitti oli ensimmäinen kyseisessä taidemuseossa. Tate Modernin rakennus on karuudessaan vaikuttava - mathipontinen, mutta synkkä. Rakennus on entisessä elämässään ollut voimalaitos ja sen kyllä huomasi. Teollisen tunnelman pystyi hahmottamaan jo rakennuksen ulkoasusta. Sisältä rakennus oli yhä askeettinen, mutta nykyaikaisempi. Melkein tuli mieleen Kiasma, joskin Kiasma on valoisampi ja vaaleampi.

Näyttelyt olivat peruskattava katsaus moderin taiteen historiaan, riittävästi töitä eri tyylisuunnista, ehkä jopa liikaa. Erikoisnäyttelynä oli Pop Life, Art in a Material World jossa olisi ollut Andy Warholia ja Jeff Koonsia mielin määrin. Päätimme kuitenkin käydä ensin perusnäyttelyn läpi ja sen jälkeen oli jo sellainen taideähky, että katsoimme parhaaksi jättää suosiolla Pop Lifen käymättä.

Näyttelystä positiivisimmin jäivät mieleen Miron maalaukset. Ne ovat siitä epätyypillistä aikansa modernia taidetta, että niitä on oikeasti kiva katsoa. Suurinta osaa maalauksista ei ollut vaan silmät alkoivat särkeä. Yksinkertaisia ja pelkistettyjä Miron työt kyllä ovat, perusväreillä mennään ja muotokieli on orgaanista. Olen aina peräänkuuluttanut taiteen "merkitystä" ja "sanomaa", mutta joudun myöntämään, etten ole aivan varma mitä Miro on halunnut töillään sanoa. Ehkä montaakin eri asiaa. Ehkä välittää tunnelmaa. En vaan jaksa enää katsoa yhtäkään maalausta joka kertoo maailman pahuudesta. Sellaista, joka on tuherrettu paksulla pensselillä, koostuu likaisista väreistä ja joka esittää "tuskaa" tai "sotaa". Tottakai maailmassa on tuskaa ja pahuutta, mutta tarviiko niitä korostaa, vähentääkö se kenenkään, edes taiteilijan pahaa oloa.

Myös Rothkon työt miellyttivät sekä Rodinin muutamat tutut veistokset. Hyvälle tuulelle saivat myös taiteilija-uppoaa-suohon sarjan valokuvat, joita oli kuulemma näytetty Saksan tv-asemalla parhaaseen katseluaikaan useina eri iltoina. Kesken ohjelman. Pari sekunttia kerrallaan. Loistavaa. En vaan millään muista työn tai taiteilijan nimeä. Jeff Koonsista en halua sanoa mitään. Kai siinä on jotain ylimaallista, jos pystyy myymään pari kaupan imuria taidekeräilijöille miljoonilla. Ja puhua työllä "uutuuden tavoittelusta". Matkalla kotiin näimme kierrätyskauan edessä pari käytettyä imuria jotka joku oli siihen jättänyt. Kierrätyskauppakin varmaan myisi imurit mielellään keräilijöille tai museolle, puhuisi teolla "vanhuudesta".


translation: Last week we went to Tate Modern. I'm ashamed to admit it was my first visit in the museum. The building of Tate Modern was impressive - vigorous but gloomy. It was clear to see the building used to be a power station. The industrial atmosphere came across from the exterior already. Interior of the building was also very ascetic, but more contemporary. It almost made me think of Kiasma, although Kiasma is more light and bright.

The collection was a comprehensive overview of the history of modern art, enough pieces from different eras, maybe even a few too many. The special exhibition was Pop Life, Art in a Material World where one could have seen plenty of Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons. However, we decided to see the main exhibition first and after that we were just so full of art, that we saw it best to stay out of Pop Life.

Miro's work sticked into my mind the most. His paintings are unusual pieces of modern art in a sense that they are actually nice to look at. Most of the paintings were not pleasant to look at and my eyes started to ache. Miro's paintings are simplified and somewhat plain, mainly relying on primary colours and organic forms. I've always highlighted the "meaning" and "message" of art, but I have to admit I'm not quite sure what Miro has tried to say with his work. Maybe many things. Maybe portray an atmosphere. I just can't bear to look more paintings which speak about the evil world. A painting which has been smudged with a large brush, consisting of dirty colours and which portrays "agony" or "war". Sure there is agony and war in the world, but do they have to be emphasised, does it make anyone's , even artist's agony any less.

Also Rothko's work pleased me and a few Rodin's well-known sculptures. I also got into a good mood after seeing series of artist-falls-to-the-swamp photographs. Allegedly they had been shown on German tv channel in prime-time on various evenings. In the middle of a tv show. Few seconds at a time. Brilliant. I just can't remember the name of the artist or the work. I don't want to say anything about Jeff Koons. I suppose there has to be something divine to be able to sell a few readymade hoovers for millions of dollars. And with this talk about "newness". On our way home we saw a few used hoovers in front of a charity shop. Someone had left them there. I'm sure the charity shop will gladly sell those hoovers to art collectors or museums, and with this talk about "oldness".

Freelancer-töiden huono puoli on se, että silloin kun töitä on, niitä on tehtävä myös viikonloppuisin. Freelancer-töiden hyvä puoli on se, että silloin kun ei enää huvita, voi mennä kävelylle. Menin kävelylle eilen aurinkoiseen syysilmaan. Ajattelin että kunhan joitain kortteleita kierrän, jalottelen ja haukkaan happea. Noh, kävelin sitten läheisen vaatekaupan ohi. Ja miten ollakaan, kaupan ikkunassa oli unelmamekkoni! Kermanvaalea, höyhenen kevyt, hörhelöinen ja vieläpä Malene Birger:a! Juuri kun olin edellisessä kirjoituksessa haikaillut vaalean mekon perään. En edes tiennyt kyseisen kaupan myyvän Malene Birgeriä, jotain Armaneita ja MaxMaraa toki, mutta olen ollut vähän sitä mieltä että kauppa on suunnattu vanhemmalle sukupolvelle ja kiertänyt sen tähän asti kaukaa. No tämä tulee muuttumaan pian!

Liike oli tietenkin suljettu, joten sovitus (ja hinnan kysyminen) jäävät tuonnemmaksi. Mutta tämä näky piristi silti päivääni kummasti! Ja jos tämä Tanskan lahja muotimaailmalle on keksinyt tuottaa hörhelöisen kevätunelman syystalveen, ehkä huokeampia versioita alkaa näkymään High Streetillä:kin. Toivossa on hyvä elää! En löytänyt kyseisen täydellisen mekon kuvaa, mutta hei, tässä Malene Birgerin muuta (tummempaa) mallistoa.


translation: The down side with being a freelancer is that when there's commissions, work needs to be done over the weekends too. The up side with being a freelancer is, that when one needs a break one can always have a walk. I went to have a walk in the sunny autumn weather yesterday. I though I'll just go around the block, stretch my legs and get some air. Well, I walked past a local fashion shop. And what do you know, there on the window was my dream dress! Cream coloured, light like a feather, frilled and even by Malene Birger! Just when I had yearned for one on my previous post. I didn't even know the shop did Malene Birger, some Arman and Max Mara sure, but I'd always thought the store was aimed for older generation and passed it over so far. Well, this is about to change soon!

The store was of course closed yesterday, so fitting (and asking the price) will have to wait. Nevertheless, this sight made my day! If the Denmark's gift to the world of fashion has decided to produce a frilly springdream for autumn/winter, maybe affordable versions of the frock will appear on the High Street too. I shall hope so! I couldn't find a picture of the perfect dress, but hey, here's some other (darker) pieces from Malene Birger's collection.

Pre-Raphaelite Fashion

Koko kesän haaveilin romanttistyylisestä valkoisesta mekosta, mutta eipä löytynyt. Tai no löytyi kyllä hääpuku (ja ihana löytyikin) mutta ei juuri arkikäyttöön sopivaa. Mietin mistä oikein olin saanut kyseisen idean alunperin. Lueskellut liikaa häälehtiä? Ei, olin varmasti poiminut idean Florence and The Machinen "Rabbit Heart" kappaleesta. Biisin videossa on satumainen Pre-Raphaelite meininki ja Florence muistuttaa aivan 1800-luvun taulujen muusaa. Upeaa!

translation: I dreamt about a long white dress all summer but couldn't find one. Or I did, my wedding dress (and it was gorgeous) but nothing for everyday use. I was thinking where I got the idea from. Had I been reading too many wedding magazines? No, I'm sure I got the idea from Florence and The Machine's "Rabbit Heart" song. On the video there's a fairytale like Pre-Raphaelite atmosphere and Florence resembles a muse from the paintings of the nineteenth century. Stunning!
