Emily Loizau on loistava esimerkki siitä että täydelliseen keikkaan, aivan täydelliseen keikkan, ei pelkkä musiikki riitä. Pitää osata esiintyä. Ja sitä Loizeu muusikkoineen osaa. Heillä oli eilen keikka Lontoon rosoisessa Sheperds Bushissa. Vaikka alue oli mitä oli Bush Hall keikkapaikkana teki hyvin oikeutta bändille. Kunhan pääovista astui sisään tunnelma muttui ja vanhan ajan tanssiassali kunnon kattokoristein odotti iltaa. Pienet harvakseltaan asetellut pyöreät pöydät sopivat salin juhlavaan tunnelmaan ja ihmisiä oli juuri riittävästi. Pääsimme mukavasti keskelle eteen ja riittävän kiinnostavan lämmittelyesiintyjän (Liz Green) jälkeen illan kohokohta saattoi alkaa.

Näimme Emilyn jo aikaisemmin viime kesänä Ranskan kulttuurikeskuksessa Lontoossa, joten tiesimme hiukan mitä odottaa. Biisit olivat vimmeisimmältä Pays Sauvage -levyltä muutamine ekstroineen, energisesti, ammattitaidolla, eläytyen ja hetkittäin raivokkaastikin esitettyinä. En tiedä tarkasti miten Emily sen saa aikaan, mutta hän todella on luonnon lahja live-esiintyessään. Energiaa riittää, instrumentit vaihtuvat ja onpa hän jopa kehittänyt tavan saada aikaan dramaattinen rysäys tömistelemällä lattiaa. Luulimme ensin että lattia on jotenkin erityisesti mikitetty, että ääni saadaan talteen. Jälkeenpäin kuitenkin saimme todisteen siitä ettei lattiassa mitään mikkejä ole, Emily sen kaiken äänen saa aikaan jaloillaan. Erityisen hyvin esiintyivät myös Emilyn sellisti Olivier Koundouno sekä rumpali Cyril Aveque. Kaverit ovat huippumuusikoita, itsevarmoja esiintyjiä mutta hauskalla tavalla, eivät tippaakaan arogantteja vaan muusikoita jotka kuulostavat ja näyttävät siltä että tietävät mitä tekevät.

Kun ilta sitten hurahti ja viimeinen biisi oli ohi, Emily lähti kävelemään salin halki kohti ulko-ovia näytti siltä että ilta oli siinä, mutta nerokkaasti salin takanurkassa olikin toinen piano. Saimme oivan niskajumpan kun Emily soitti ja lauloi ystävänsä Jocelyn Westin kanssa nurkassa bonus biisin. Sen jälkeen uhkaavasti tosin näytti siltä että keikka päättyi. Mutta ehei, sen sijaan Emily, Olivier sellisti ja Cyril rumpali tulivat soittamaan keskelle salia, aivan pöytämme viereen. Oli upeaa nähdä heidät aivan lähietäisyydeltä ja nauttia viimeisimmät kappaleet. Kaiken kaikkiaan loistava, loistava, loistava keikka. Parempaa ei voi toivoa. Ja ai niin, muoti.. Emilyn puku oli kuin 40-luvun elokuvasta, musta pitkä iltapuku jossa oli röyhelöä yläosassa ja paljaat varpaat jotta voi hyppiä, Olivierilla ja Cyrilillä oli ihanaa vanhan ajan herrasmies-tyyliä kiinni napitettuine liiveineen, kauluspaitoineen ja Cyrilillä trillby hattu.


translation: Emily Loizeau is a great example of what a perfect gig can be like. It's not just about the music, it's also about the performance. And that's something that Emily and her band are masters at. They had a gig in London's rough Sheperds Bush yesterday. Although the area is what it is Bush Hall really did do justice to their gig. Once we got in from the main doors the atmosphere changed and old-fashioned ball room with proper ceiling cornicings and sparkly chandeliers was waiting for the night. Small loosely positioned round tables suited the elegant atmoshpere and there were just the right amount of people. We got nice seats in center frontish and after an aduqately interesting supporting act (Liz Green) the highlight of the night could begin.

We had seen Emily once already in London's Institut Francais so we sort of knew what to expect. The songs were from the latest Pays Sauvage -record with a few extras, performed energetically, professionally, vividly and at times fiercely. I don't know exactly how Emily does it, but she has a nature's gift when she performs. Energy flows, the instruments change and she has even developped a way to make a dramatic smashing sound by stomping her feet against the floor. At first we thought the floor had some special mics to capture the noice but afterwards we got proof that there are no special mics, it's just Emily making all the noice with her feet. Also Emily's cellist Olivier Koundouno and drummer Cyril Aveque performed particalrly well. The blokes are top musicians, confident performers but in a fun way. They are not the slightest arrogant but musicians who sound and look like they know what they are doing.

After the night had passed and the last song was over, Emily started to walk accross the hall towards the doors. It looked like the night was over but geniously there was another piano on the back of the room. We got a splendid exercise for our necks as Emily played and sang with her friend Jocelyn West a bonus song in the corner. After this it certainly looked like that was it for the night, but ooh no. Emily came to the center of the hall with cellist Olivier and drummer Cyril, very close to our table. It was great to see them so closely and enjoy the last few songs. All and all it was a magnificent, magnificent, magnificent gig. We couldn't have asked for more. Oh and the fashion... Emily's dress looked like it could have been from a film of the 40s, a long black frock with frills on the collar and bare feet so that she could jump, Olivier and Cyril had a very cool classic gentleman -look going on, wearing vests with buttons done, crisp shirts and Cyril even had a trillby hat.
